What have you learned today?

I’ve learned several things today:

-Not to rush things drying.  Particularly paper mache paste and metallic gold spray paint.

-People can be mean.  But, I don’t have to care.

-Making things is making me happier than almost anything else I do in my day.

Tell me what you’ve learned today (funny, snide, or serious)!

Knock-Knock!

Who’s there?
Baby owl.
Baby owl who?
Baby, owl see you as soon as you open up!

Okay, okay, bad jokes aside… my darling fellow Tumblr-knitter, Melissa from Slip Knit Pass, has posted a plea for hand knit baby gift ideas!

slipknitpass:

My cousin Danielle announced a few weeks ago that she is pregnant and expecting her first child in October. I am waiting to hear of any news of the sex of the baby before I start my knitting frenzy. I am hoping for a girl because I have quite a few little baby dresses in my Ravelry library just calling my name.

So while we are on the subject…I wanna know of your favorite baby things to knit. Any patterns you can share? What are the most talked about knitted baby gifts in your family?

I couldn’t help but make an Etsy-esque Treasury of some of my baby patterns.  Today’s theme?  Owls!  (please note that all of these links are to patterns on the fabulous Ravelry.com— you must request an invite to join, and you must join to see the patterns!  I highly recommend joining Ravelry, if you haven’t already.  Inspiration and yarn porn abound!)

“Owl Keep You Safe” car seat strap covers by Melissa Schaschwary
Only 60 yards of Super Bilky on size ten and a half needles makes these car seat accessories a quick and unique gift!  Perfect for the last minute project.

Owlet pullover by Kate Davies
Seriously, who doesn’t love a baby in a classy owl sweater?  The button eyes are just too cute.  Several Ravelers altered the pattern by only giving button eyes to one owl on the front and left the other owls unadorned.

The Hoot Toque by Megan Grewal
I’m a sucker for those kids’ hats that look like an animal head.  I have no idea why, but I find them irresistable.  (It doesn’t help that this kiddo was already irresistable— look at those deep brown baby eyes)!

The Sleepy Owl Hat by Olesya Pronyaeva
A crocheted alternative, for those of you who find knitting in the round to be annoying or difficult on little tiny baby items!  This pattern is part of the Ravelry library, but may also be found for purchase in Olesya’s Etsy shop!

The Bramble Owl Softie by Sonya Philip
Babies need toys, right?  I love the cutesy owls, but I also love the old, wise owl look (reminiscent of Owl from the original Winnie the Pooh books)!

Oliver Owl by Michele Wilcox
Sooo darling.  Love the garterstitch belly and the tuft ears!

A fender-bender freed the VW emblem from the front grille of my Volkswagen Jetta— a new one comes with my new grille, so now I have to figure out what to do with the old emblem!  I love my Volkswagen and would love to make a handy object or fun decoration out of the old emblem— help me enter the world of upcycling DIY and give me a suggestion for how to use it!
So here’s how the game is played:
There are multiple ways to win!  I will be giving away a custom-dyed skein of yarn in colors of your choice to the winner of the drawing.  You can also win 25% off discount codes to my Etsy shop if you submit one of my favorite ideas!
Describe your ideas in a comment on this post.  This gives you one entry into the drawing.  (Please note that each individual may only receive one entry for their ideas, regardless of how many ideas you submit!  But please, suggest away— the more ideas, the merrier)
Repost this blog entry on your blog, facebook, a forum, etc— post a link to each site you share, in the comments section.  Each share will give you another entry into the drawing!
My favorite couple of ideas (as well as the blog or Etsy shop of their imagineer) will get featured in a future blogpost (yay free promotion)!  These favorites will also receive a 25% off discount code for any one item in my Etsy shop!
We’ll keep this going until I’ve received at least 30 ideas!  At that point, it’s drawing time!
The emblem is about five or six inches across, two or three inches deep, and has a slightly convex surface.  (Please note that convex means it bulges outwards slightly and isn’t flat!  It isn’t possible to place flat bottomed objects on top of it, say a potted plant, without them tipping or sliding off)!
Post any questions as a comment, or email me at flatbranchfibers@gmail.com

Wonderful!  I love felting crafts with roving, it’s so quick and easy and fun.  I might pick up some plain wool next time I visit my LYS and do some dyeing so I can make a few soaps and maybe some felt beads!
